Sunday May the 29th. Flick off 9am.
Venue: Woody Point Clubhouse.
As Ronaldo scored the last penalty to help Real Madrid win the champions league, there were Subbuteo players converging on Woody Point from all over South East Queensland. The Brisbane Subbuteo May Competition was contested by no less than 8 players. Our regular flickers were joined by 2 new members, both returning to the game after a hiatus of 10 years or so. Shane Robinson and Ian Garred acquitted themselves well considering the time spent out of the game, and with a bit of practice along with brushing up on the newer rules, they will no doubt be contesting the trophy soon.
Giuseppe having returned from his trip home to Italy had (with the help of Rik) setup 4 tables in the great looking Woody Point Clubhouse, the home of the Brisbane Subbuteo Club. No fans were needed this time as a perfect Queensland Winters day was very much appreciated. The format would be a straight out league, everybody playing each other once.
The big tie of the first round was Andrew B v Gus, who fought it out in the last competition to be winner. It was a nervy tight affair, with very few real chances. The game ended 0-0.
Round 2 was the highest scoring round, Andrew B putting 4 past his Dad, and Giuseppe welcomed Shane to 4 without reply also.
Round 3 had previous competition winners playing each other. Rik and Gus couldn’t be separated and finished 1-1, Gus probably escaping defeat with a miraculous defensive flick near to full time. The other big game turned out to be a route to Andrew B beating Giuseppe 4-0.
Round 4 saw Rik continue his assault on the trophy with a 3-0 win over Rob, and other table topper Andrew B won by the same scoreline against Shane. Ian had a very credible 2-2 draw with Giuseppe. Andy R drew 0-0 with Gus, seeing him keep in contention.
Round 5 was a battle of the 2 Andrews, with Andrew B coming out on top 2-0, and Rik squeezed passed Giuseppe 1-0 to get level on points at the top with Andrew B. Shane and Ian played each other with Shane finishing strongly to win 3-1.
Round 6 saw the reigning champ Gus lose any chance of a third win on the bounce, comfortably beaten by an energetic Giuseppe 3-0. The two leaders Rik and Andrew B both won to setup a grandstand finale.
The last of the fixtures had Andrew B versus Rik, both had same points tally, both had won 5 and drawn 1 going into the final game, but Andrew’s superior goal difference meant a draw would be enough. Rik took an early lead in the first half, but the game (and trophy) was still in the balance as a goal either way would decide the winner. Halfway through the second half, Rik found the bottom corner to go 2-0 up, and hold on for the victory.
Special thanks again to Giuseppe for supplying a great venue, and hospitality.
BSC welcomes all newcomers to come along and join us, we are happy to assist in training, and supplying equipment to get you started, and we encourage former flickers to return for a bit of fun.
Next tournament is on Sunday 26th June, check Brisbane Subbuteo Club website for details.
