The March Tournament was the very first to be held on the Sunshine Coast by the Brisbane Subbuteo Club. We had four seasoned players turn up for a league format, every one playing each other twice. The first round saw the two local lads leading at half time. Rik managed 2 very late goals to get back to 2-2 with Andy, and Gus amazingly held onto a 3-2 lead over Giuseppe who has a habit of scoring in the dying seconds against Gus. The next round saw Rik in another 2-2 draw, this time against Gus. Rik finished the strongest and had a game winning goal dis allowed due to having a player in an offside position – much to the relief of Gus. Giuseppe got his first points of the day with a narrow 2-1 victory over Andy. The two local lads were up against each other next, with Gus taking a lead in the 1st minute with a great goal on the move from a seemingly dead end position. Andy went on to lose 3-1 but scored a great consolation goal at lightning speed. Giuseppe went on to prove just why he is currently ranked 26th in the world with a fine 5-2 win over the reigning champion Rik. Round 4 saw the table leaders fight out a tense 0-0 draw, whilst Rik finally got into winning ways with a comfortable 5-1 win over Andy. The penultimate round proved to be the tightest, Gus in another 0-0 draw this time with Rik, whilst Andy and Giuseppe got 2 apiece. The last round had the top three in contention for the trophy, though Gus could make sure with a win. Giuseppe did his best , and beat Rik for the second time with a 3-1 score line. The local derby part II was a very tight affair, Gus showing some nervousness this close to the Trophy. Eventually Gus made the breakthrough but Andy was by no means out of it. Eventually Andy conceded again after being distracted by his own phone (turn it off next time Andy). This upset Andy which shortly after induced a moment of total concentration breakdown, Andy inexplicably passed the ball back into his own net. The look of total disbelief was not caught on camera but would have been priceless. So Riks’ very impressive winning streak of three straight tournaments came to end with Gus winning his first tournament since June last year. So the first Sunshine Coast Tournament saw the trophy won on home soil, and a thoroughly enjoyable day had by all. A special thanks goes to Kylie who showed up to make some incredibly good pizzas.
